One volunteer

Renegade's mast is craned out before winter.

Well, at last the mast is removed and Renegade is at Carrow.

 

Water levels in the Yare were low yesterday and Renegade was aground at Bramerton when we arrived at 0700, but with the engine “full astern” we managed to get away. We made good time to Reedham to be greeted with “You’re two hours too early.” from Mr Sanderson. In the event this was an underestimate, since the tide continued to ebb and the level to drop after the predicted time of LW. One local grey beard looked over the quay and commented that he had never seen it so low.

 

We had to wait until the afternoon before there was sufficient water to get Renegade alongside the quay near to the crane. To add to the difficulties the SW wind blew up to gale force, so the lift was delayed further until a suitable lull.

 

Since throwing a line over the lower spreaders had proved impossible in the strong wind, the brothers Sanderson then defied conventional salty wisdom by taking a ladder aboard from which to do the job. With a belch of black diesel smoke and a mighty heave from the crane out came the mast with the younger Mr Sanderson wresting with the foot in the wind.

 

The mast was lowered to rest on the pulpit and pushpit and with all the spare ropes ends gathered up we made our way back towards Norwich arriving at Bramerton as dusk was falling. Having put Piers and Geoff ashore, Dennis and I completed the trip to Carrow arriving as the last hint of daylight faded away.

 

Derek then kindly plied us with tea before returning Dennis and me to our cars at Bramerton.

Have just rung Derek - he and Dennis arrived back this morning and now on mooring on  Orwell - easy crossing from Texel.

A Brand Spanking New Z-Spars Mast, Rig, Boom / Vang and Furling gear,

Re-juvinates Renegade (27th June 2005)

The finishing touches are being added to Renegade's new mast rig at Levington Marina. Emma, aloft in the bosun's chair, volunteered to fit the signal halyards. After bending the sails to the new mast and sorting out the positions of all the new halyards and reefing pendants we took her for short trial down to Harwich. Some futher adjustments were very efficiently and willingly carried out by Z Spars to rig the baby and emergency stays and fit the antenna and the next day we put her through her paces in a 5/6 to Brightlingsea.

Renegade has returned to the Orwell after a successful cruise to Lowestoft and back. The Renegaders relax at Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club Marina

Daisy, Classic Broads Yacht

Daisy competes in the Three Rivers Race. 4th June 2005 (I owned this boat in 1976. As I was driving towards Acle today I saw a gaffer with 79 on the sail and realised that we were old friends, so I stopped to take some photos.)

Renegade mast specification. (base blocks will not be reused) 

New mast step on existing plywood backing. I suggest making a new wood backing piece to fit. This will require cutting a larger rebate into the central frame. 

Renegade mast step removed. The original was held onto a piece of plywood by 6 machine screws. (You can see the nuts for 2 on the forward frame.) The ply was hed down by 6 woodscrews.
